Community Acupuncture

New Patient Form

What to expect during a Community Acupuncture Treatment:

  • Community Acupuncture sessions are done in a room with up to 7 other patients (photo is the room)

NOTE:   During COVID-19 and until further notice, there are a maximum of 4 chairs in the room allowing plenty of room for social distancing. Slot reservations are required.

  • Pick a reclining chair of your choice, sit back and relax.
  • Your chair has a small clipboard on it with a form containing two questions relating to why you are coming in to see us today. Fill out the form.
  • The acupuncturist will come to you and briefly discuss your concerns and then begin the treatment.
  • Treatments are simple and concise and are done with minimal talking.
  • The points used are on the front of the body, legs, arms, hands, feet and ears, so everyone remains fully clothed.
  • Treatment is tailored to your specific symptoms.
  • Treatment lasts one hour.

Why Community Acupuncture?

We started offering Community Acupuncture in 2011 at our Portland, Oregon office. Having just moved into our existing clinic space, it was the first time we had a room that was large enough to accommodate the concept. It’s a concept that Acupuncturists Without Borders use when they go into disaster areas. Lisa Francolini was trained by them for this model. In their Community Acupuncture model, they treat hundred’s of people at a time. Mostly for shock and trauma, so they developed a protocol where everyone got the same needling treatment. It’s highly effective and an amazing experience.

However, as the owner and visionary of RiverWest Acupuncture, Lisa had the commitment of wanting our patients to get a specific needling protocol for their symptoms when they came in for treatment. It was also a time that we saw so many of our patients lose benefits as they lost jobs, got downsized or their employer cut the benefit as a way to stay afloat. Thus, our version of Community Acupuncture was born. We use it in a couple different ways at RiverWest Acupuncture. We consider it just part of our bag of tools. Some of our patients predominantly do Community Acupuncture, with a very occasional individual treatment. Other patients that have acupuncture benefits, but a limited number of visits, pepper in the combination of Community Acupuncture sessions with individual sessions to “extend” benefits.

The symptoms treated with community acupuncture are generally less complex, and can include:

  • Depression and Anxiety Disorders
  • Pain
  • Headaches, including migraines
  • Stress

The unseen power of Community Acupuncture

The last piece of information around the Community Acupuncture that is counter-intuitive is the power of the group. Being in a room with others has also been found to augment your personal healing. The group “energy” provides deeper relaxation, harmony and enhanced healing.
